What’s the Difference Between a Lash Lift and a Lash Perm?

A lash lift and a lash perm both use a chemical process to curl natural lashes, but they produce different results using different techniques. A lash lift uses a silicone shield to create a smooth, upward curl that lifts the lash from the root — creating the appearance of longer, more open eyes. A lash perm uses a small rod and produces a tighter, more circular curl. In modern professional practice, the lash lift has largely replaced the lash perm because it delivers a more natural-looking, flattering result for most clients.

What Is a Lash Lift?

A lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that uses a silicone lifting shield and a chemical solution to reshape the natural lashes upward from the root. The result is a lifted, fanned-out appearance that makes lashes look longer and the eyes look more open — without extensions.

A lash tint is usually added at the same time, darkening the lashes to enhance the effect. The result lasts approximately 6–8 weeks, gradually relaxing as the natural lash growth cycle continues.

What Is a Lash Perm?

A lash perm is an older technique that uses a small cylindrical rod (similar to a hair perm rod) to curl the lashes in a circular pattern. The lashes are wrapped around the rod and a chemical solution sets the curl. The result is a tighter, more uniform curl rather than the upward lift of a modern lash lift.

Lash perms were popular before the lash lift technique became widely available. They are less common today because the lifting shield method produces results that suit a wider range of clients and eye shapes.

What’s the Main Difference in Results?

The key difference is the direction and shape of the curl:

  • Lash lift: Lifts the lash upward from the root using a flat or curved silicone shield. The result looks like naturally long, curled lashes pointing upward — similar to the effect of a very good eyelash curler, but lasting weeks.
  • Lash perm: Wraps the lash around a rod, creating a circular curl that starts from mid-shaft. Can look less natural and more obviously "permed."

For most clients, the lash lift produces a more flattering, natural-looking result. It's also easier to customise — the size of the silicone shield determines how dramatic the lift is, allowing the technician to tailor the result to the client's eye shape.

Which Treatment Lasts Longer?

Both treatments last approximately the same length of time: 6–8 weeks, depending on the individual's lash growth cycle and aftercare. Neither treatment is permanent — as lashes shed and regrow, the lifted or permed lashes are gradually replaced by untreated ones.

Aftercare is important for both: clients should avoid water and steam for the first 24–48 hours and avoid oil-based eye products that can break down the treatment.

Which Is Better — a Lash Lift or a Lash Perm?

In most professional contexts today, the lash lift is considered the superior treatment:

  • More customisable to the client's eye shape
  • Produces a more natural-looking result
  • Better suited to a wider range of lash lengths and types
  • Higher client demand in the current market

Lash perms are occasionally still requested, but the majority of clients and technicians have moved to lash lifts. If you're training as a lash technician, the lash lift is the technique worth mastering first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lash lift the same as a lash perm?

No. They both use chemicals to reshape natural lashes, but the technique, tools, and results differ. A lash lift uses a silicone shield to lift lashes upward from the root; a lash perm wraps lashes around a rod to create a circular curl. The lash lift is more widely used today.

Does a lash lift damage your lashes?

When performed correctly with appropriate products and timing, a lash lift should not cause significant lash damage. Over-processing — leaving the chemical on too long or repeating treatments too frequently — can weaken lashes. Proper training and following the manufacturer's guidelines are essential.

Can I have a lash lift if I have short lashes?

Lash lifts work best on lashes that are at least 4–5mm long. Very short or very fine lashes may not hold the lift as well. A trained technician will assess the client's natural lashes before the treatment and advise whether a lash lift is suitable.

How long does a lash lift appointment take?

A lash lift and tint appointment typically takes 45–75 minutes from start to finish, including the consultation, treatment, and tinting.

How much does a lash lift cost in Australia?

Lash lift and tint prices in Australia typically range from $80–$150, depending on the technician's experience, location, and salon or home-studio setup. Research current pricing in your area before setting your own rates.

Do I need separate training for lash perms?

Most lash lift courses don't specifically cover the lash perm rod technique since lash lifts have largely replaced perms. If you want to offer both, look for a course that covers both techniques, or supplement your lash lift training with specific lash perm guidance.
