8 Techniques Every Make-up Artist Needs to Master

As a make-up artist, you will no doubt have tips up your sleeve to create beautiful looks for your clients and wow them with your skills. To be successful as a make-up artist, there are some techniques that you need to master and ensure you are always in demand.

Here at our eight techniques that turn your make-up skills from good to great.

  1. The perfect lip

Lips come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing that doesn’t go out of fashion is the desire for a beautiful red lip. However, the red lip can be a tricky technique to master. The secret is to find the perfect shade for your client, which takes into consideration the tone of their skin so that it complements them beautifully.

  1. Achieving a flawless natural look

When many clients use a make-up artist for their wedding or a special occasion, they may ask for a natural look. A natural look enhances their features and gives them that fresh-faced look.

If you have been asked for this, you should aim to brighten their skin. When it comes to shades of eyeshadow, lip colour and blush, use colours that are slightly darker than their natural shade, and you will give them that beautiful natural look they have asked for.

  1. Contouring

Contouring has become a must-have technique for make-up artists. It allows you to sculpt the face and show off your clients’ best features. Use darker shades to chisel and sculpt under the cheekbones, jawline and on each side of the nose.

Lighter shades should be used to highlight their best features, such as cheekbones and Cupid’s bow.

The trick to achieving the perfect contour is to blend, blend, blend!

  1. The bridal look

As a make-up artist, you may often be asked to do a bride’s make-up on the most important day of her life. Ask your client what she wants to look like on her day and follow her brief. A trial is always recommended.

  1. Get that glow

The bronzed goddess look is often desirable, and it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, even if the sun does! Luckily, you can achieve this look with bronzer. Apply bronzer wherever the light would naturally hit the face, such as the top of the forehead and under the cheekbones. Don’t forget to finish off the look with some well-placed highlighter.

  1. The eyeliner flick

If your clients are asking you for the cat-eye look, you need to master the eyeliner flick. Whether they want a bold look or a subtle flick, you need to practice this look to get it just right.

  1. It’s all about the eyes

The smoky eye has long been popular, and it doesn’t just have to refer to dark shades across the lids. A smoky eye refers to the technique, rather than the shades used. The trick is to apply complementing colours in various depths of shade. And, of course, you will need to blend this flawlessly to perfect this look.

  1. Themed looks

You want to achieve whichever look your client asks for, so whether that is Hollywood glam or 80s inspired make-up, make sure you are aware of the different looks and build up your portfolio of skills.
